Countries That Ban Cell Phone Use While Driving

Austria - Greece

Below is a list of countries that have banned the use of a cell phone when driving unless used with some form of hands-free kit. Out of the 53 countries listed, only eight allow drivers to talk on their cell phones without a hands-free device, however two of these countries are currently reconsidering their policies and five have partial bans (including the United States).

Austria - Banned

Fines: Vary. Up to US $22 per incident


Bahrain - Banned

Fines: Vary. Possible imprisonment


Belgium - Banned

Phones can be used without a hands-free unit when the car is stationary, but not while in traffic (such as at traffic lights)


Brazil - Banned

Canada - Partial Ban (Newfoundland Only)

Fines: up to US $180


Chile - Banned



China - Banned



Czech Republic - Banned

Germany - Banned

Allowed without a hands-free device only when the engine is switched off
